The IHO Secretariat has issued a call for candidates to participate in the Category "A" MSc in Hydrographic Science at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) as part of the IHO Capacity-Building Programme. Nominations for the 14th cohort of the FIG/IHO/ICA recognized course should be sent by 11 January of 2026.

With the wide range of uses for reliable high-resolution ocean data, hydrography as a discipline is more relevant than ever. It also leads to a fascinating range of careers, whether at-sea, on-shore, with a technical, cooperation or policy focus etc.

The two selected candidates for the MSc in Hydrographic Science at USM will have the opportunity to learn about the planning and preparation of hydrographic surveys, data collection, data processing and analysis, quality assurance checks for international hydrographic standards, electronic navigational chart production, and much more.

In addition to the academic fees, this opportunity also provides financial support that covers most students’ expenses, including travel costs, accommodation, medical insurance, learning materials, and a living allowance.

“Category ‘A’ trainees will acquire the skills to produce, process, and deliver accurate hydrographic data, which is essential for science-based, resilient decisions in coastal development, maritime navigation, and the sustainable use of marine resources. This reflects the fundamental role of today’s emerging hydrographers, who are joining a global network dedicated to ensuring safe navigation, promoting sustainable development, supporting marine policymaking, and driving future scientific breakthroughs.”

- Luigi Sinapi, IHO Director.

Modern day challenges such as climate change and rising sea levels together with rapid changes in technology call for a qualified and trained workforce. With the wide range of uses for reliable high-resolution ocean data, hydrography as a discipline is more relevant than ever. It also leads to a fascinating range of careers, whether at-sea, on-shore, with a technical, cooperation or policy focus etc.

The following requirements must be met by nominated candidates:

  • Be employed by a national hydrographic office, a maritime authority or a related national agency in the nominating country.
  • Have a university diploma (equivalent to the US Undergraduate Diploma) in a hydrography-related area (hydrography, cartography, ocean sciences, engineering, etc.) with a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0.
  • Provide evidence of a good standard of written and spoken English.
  • Have a high standard in mathematics, physics and computing and meet the minimum requirements of the Standards of Competence for Category "A" Hydrographic Surveyors.
  • Comply with the application requirements to USM.

The IHO would like to thank the Republic of Korea for funding this opportunity.

The IHO Capacity-Building Programme works with costal states to support them in developing their hydrographic capacity in order to help them meet their international obligations and pursue their national ocean priorities. The coordination of education and training courses in partnership with more than 60 institutions in 20 countries is a success story: so far, a network of more than 2000 alumni has been established and prepares the future of hydrography. Through the programme, a variety of opportunities are offered to IHO Member States, including both short and long courses, at-sea experiences, internships and webinars.
