Oceanic Data Sharing and the Law of the Sea to be addressed in ABLOS Seminar

Published: 18/08/2026 - 10:36

The upcoming ABLOS Seminar will bring together international experts to explore the role of ocean data and data sharing in supporting the implementation and development of the Law of the Sea.

Ocean data is fundamental to the sustainable management of ocean spaces, resources, and activities. Yet, collecting, exchanging, and interpreting ocean data across different domains and technologies remains a complex challenge involving scientific, legal, and operational considerations transcending the ocean sector.

Bringing together experts from across disciplines, this seminar will explore the many dimensions of oceanic data sharing, from seabed geology and biodiversity to the management of activities in the high seas, highlighting how technical expertise and the law of the sea can support better cooperation and understanding.

Everyone interested in ocean governance, marine science, open access data, hydrography, and the law of the sea is welcome to join.

The seminar, hosted by the Hydrographic Institute of the Portuguese Navy, will take place on 16 September 2026 in Lisbon, Portugal. Virtual attendance is possible.
