DCDB
In 1988, the U.S. National Geophysical Data Centre (NGDC) offered to host and operate a Worldwide digital oceanic bathymetry data center on behalf of the IHO Member States. This led to the official establishment (in June 1990) of the IHO Data Centre for Digital Bathymetry (DCDB). Data provided by the IHO Member States are available for download from the DCDB web site. It is possible to search, view or download all available data using the DCDB Web Map Server and GEODAS interfaces (please see below).
IHO Council
During the inter-Assembly period the Council coordinates the activities of the Organization within the framework of the strategy, work programme and financial arrangements, prepares proposals concerning the overall strategy and the work programme, considers the financial statements and budget estimates, review proposals submitted to it by subsidiary organs, proposes the establishment of subsidiary organs, reviews draft agreements between the Organization and other organizations. The Council meets one a year and submits its reports, obervations, recommendations, and draft decisions to the Assembly and the IHO Member States for approval. The General Regulations applying to the Council and the Rules of Procedures are part of the IHO Publication M-1 and can be downloaded from the Publications section, Category "M" - Miscellaneous.
IHO and NOAA Reaffirm their Commitment to Ocean Data with a New MoU
During the 2023 International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Assembly, Secretary General Dr. Mathias Jonas announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the United States’ National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA has supported the IHO since 1990 by hosting the IHO Data Center for Digital Bathymetry (DCDB), an online, open-access database that stores ocean depth data from around the world.

How to Participate in World Hydrography Day
Celebrated on 21 June, World Hydrography Day is designed to raise awareness about hydrography and how it plays a role in improved knowledge of the seas and oceans.

Legacy website and other services unavailable
Following a fire at one of the IHO web hosting service providers, the IHO legacy website, the S-100 website, and some documents on the IHO website are currently unavailable.

Navigation Warnings on the Web
The following map shows the limits of the 21 Operational NAVAREAs. NAVAREA Implementation Status and links to NAVAREA Coordinators’ website https://iho.int/en/iridium-safetycast-implementation-status (Note not all NAVAREA Coordinators publish warnings on the World Wide Web, some only provide Notice to Mariners.) Click here for a full list of contact details for all NAVAREA Coordinators NB The availability of Navigational Warnings on the web does not relieve Masters / Captains of the requirement to receive Navigational Warnings via IMO/IHO approved broadcast systems, as websites are not continuously updated and not necessarily monitored for correctness.
Empowering Women in Hydrography
While the number of women in the workforce has risen in recent decades, there remains an imbalance between men and women in leadership positions, and women are still underrepresented in many STEM subjects. Currently women working in hydrography represent 25% of the demographics, and only 13% of national hydrographers are women. As for IHO bodies, only 24% are chaired by women. To try and change this, the IHO has launched a new project to “Empower Women in Hydrography” with the goal of raising awareness about career opportunities in hydrography, and to increase the number of women in leadership positions. In 2022 the project was officially endorsed as a UN Ocean Decade Action.
Circular Letters
The IHO Secretariat communicates important information to Member States (MS) via Circular Letter (CL). Some CLs invite Member States to provide feedback to the Secretariat (e.g. approval of new editions of IHO Standards). In cases where MSs are invited to provide feedback via online form, the link to the form will be included in the CL. Further information is provided in CL 20/2019). All previous years CLs are available from the IHO searchable Document Archive. ________________ Spanish Circular Letters are available HERE
