The adoption also has profound implications for ocean data collection and sea surveys, as these new products will require enhanced data in order to realize their full potential.
Global hydrographic community to gather in Monaco for pivotal International Hydrographic Organization Assembly
Government representatives, maritime authorities, international organizations, and industry leaders from across the world will gather in Monaco from 20 to 23 April 2026 for the Assembly of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), the principal global forum for decisions on hydrography, seabed mapping, and maritime data standards.

Women in Hydrography: New Data Reveal Gains in Leadership, Gaps in Workforce Representation
The latest data on the number of men and women working in hydrography have been released. With 51 IHO Member States answering the EWH 2025 survey, the results reveal advancements in some areas but also challenges.
Naming undersea features using the same system as the stars discussed during SCUFN meeting
With this year seeing a new record number of proposals to name undersea features, members of the GEBCO Sub Committee on Undersea Feature Names (SCUFN) discussed ways to deal with increasingly large numbers of proposals but also how to safeguard data on features in disputed areas.
Empowering Women in Hydrography
While the number of women in the workforce has risen in recent decades, there remains an imbalance between men and women in leadership positions, and women are still underrepresented in many STEM subjects. To try and change this, the IHO launched the project “Empowering Women in Hydrography” in 2021, with the goal of raising awareness about career opportunities in hydrography, and to increase the number of women in leadership positions. The most recent study, conducted in early 2026, revealed that since the project's implementation, the percentage of female national hydrographers has increased from 7% to 10.5%. Similarly, the proportion of women chairing IHO bodies has risen from 13% to 32%. Additionally, women now vice-chair 44% of IHO organs. In 2022 the project was officially endorsed as a UN Ocean Decade Action.
Understanding sea-level rise - improving predictions through studying the shape of the seabed
In many places around the world, data clearly shows the level of the sea is rising. In low lying coastal areas, even small increases when coupled with high tides and storm surges have had devastating consequences, such as altering coastlines, impacting offshore energy infrastructure and displacing populations. A better understanding of factors influencing sea level is vital in order to prepare for and mitigate its impacts.
