Seabed data to be discussed at the Ocean Decade Conference
The IHO and the OECD are co-hosting a satellite event during the UN Ocean Decade conference in Barcelona. Entitled "The Seabed Data We Need for the Ocean We Want," this session aims to look at the importance of advancing our understanding of the ocean and fostering increased investment in related activities.
Participants in the IHO – Korea capacity-building initiative graduate from the University of Southern Mississippi
The IHO attended the graduation ceremony for the ten Hydrographic Science students at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM), USA, on Friday 29 July . Of these, three students from Bangladesh, Philippines, and Thailand were part of the Category "A" Master of Science in Hydrographic Science Programme under the IHO-Republic of Korea (ROK) Programme of Technical Cooperation.

2nd UN Ocean Conference Lisbon
The Stockholm Environment Institute and the IHO are organizing a side-event on seabed mapping & marine data to support multifunctional spatial planning at the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon. Organized in partnership with IOC-UNESCO, Sweden, the African Union Commission, and the United Kingdom, the event will look at the role of marine data to inform the competing needs of a broad range of ocean stakeholders. Participants will discuss activities, innovations and challenges, as well as technologies and monitoring systems. It will examine how improved data could inform the organization of the marine space to ensure a more sustainable use of ecosystems.
Naming undersea features using the same system as the stars discussed during SCUFN meeting
With this year seeing a new record number of proposals to name undersea features, members of the GEBCO Sub Committee on Undersea Feature Names (SCUFN) discussed ways to deal with increasingly large numbers of proposals but also how to safeguard data on features in disputed areas.
IHO and NOAA Reaffirm their Commitment to Ocean Data with a New MoU
During the 2023 International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Assembly, Secretary General Dr. Mathias Jonas announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the United States’ National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA has supported the IHO since 1990 by hosting the IHO Data Center for Digital Bathymetry (DCDB), an online, open-access database that stores ocean depth data from around the world.
