New editor for the International Hydrographic Review
The International Hydrographic Review, the scientific journal published by the IHO, has a new editor. Dr Patrick Westfeld began his new functions on 5 January 2022. He brings with him solid technical knowledge, coupled with good experience with academia and scientific publishing.

Importance of Hydrography
Definition of Hydrography Hydrography is the branch of applied sciences which deals with the measurement and description of the physical features of oceans, seas, coastal areas, lakes and rivers, as well as with the prediction of their change over time, for the primary purpose of safety of navigation and in support of all other marine activities, including economic development, security and defence, scientific research, and environmental protection. In addition to supporting safe and efficient navigation of ships, hydrography underpins almost every other activity associated with the sea, including: - resource exploitation - fishing, minerals,.. - environmental protection and management - maritime boundary delimitation - national marine spatial data infrastructures - recreational boating - maritime defence and security - tsunami flood and inundation modelling - coastal zone management - tourism - marine science
Historic Outcomes at 2026 Assembly: New Leadership, New Structures, and Global Standards
Representatives of the 104 IHO Member States reached decisions which will change the future of the organization during the 4th session of the Assembly. This triennial event held in Monaco saw crucial advancements in hydrography and international collaboration including the creation of a new entity, a new office, as well as new leaders.

Guidance on use of satellites to gather depth data
The IHO has published the first “Satellite-Derived Bathymetry Best Practice Guide” for the hydrographic community. The new document provides an overview of methods and factors to consider when applying SDB to map shallow coastal environments.
What is progress with crowd-sourced depth data around the world?
The Crowdsourced Bathymetry Working Group met last week to discuss progress on an IHO-led citizen science initiative to collect seafloor depth data. Discussions focused on updating guidance and learning about progress from some of the first trial projects around the world.
