From ocean mapping to Argo floats: how are we learning about the changing ocean?
Better ocean data can be used to inform a variety of decisions from storm preparedness to seaweed farming. As part of the Monaco Ocean Week, the IHO hosted an event which provided an overview of some of the work being done to increase our knowledge of the ocean, from Prince Albert I of Monaco’s original idea of ocean mapping to the Argo programme, an exciting, global multidisciplinary project.
IHO Member States gather for Council meeting
IHO Member States gathered this week as part of the 5th meeting of the Council. Presided by Geneviève Béchard of Canada, participants were able to take stock on progress and discuss next steps on several key actions such as the roadmap for S-100 implementation and the future conversion from S-57 to S-101 ENCs.

Over 600 participants from 80 countries gathered online as part of the GEBCO Week to discuss initiatives to map the seafloor and increase our knowledge of the oceans.
IHO releases new standards for hydrographic surveys
The IHO released earlier this month a new edition of the Standards for Hydrographic surveys (S-44). In addition to surveys to support the safety of navigation, these standards can be adapted for oil and gas, renewable energies, dredging, geophysics, and geotechnics.

Standards in Force
Introduction SOLAS regulations V/18 and V/19, requires that in order to achieve chart carriage requirements (in terms of SOLAS), the ECDIS equipment must conform to the relevant IMO performance standards. ECDIS units on board are required to comply with one of two performance standards (either IMO resolution A.817(19), as amended; or resolution MSC.232(82)), depending on the date of their installation.
