Vital services continue around the world
Despite the covid-19 pandemic and many people across the world having to work from home, Hydrographic Offices around the globe can be proud of the work they are doing to continue to ensure safety at sea and other vital maritime services. Hydrographic Offices have had to adapt to new circumstances and are successfully ensuring that critical operations move forwards. Maritime Safety Information continues to be shared, NAVAREAs covered, and even the production and maintenance of digital nautical charts (ENCs) and relevant online marine data services is continuing despite constraints linked with the pandemic.
Progress on Hydrographic Standards and Services
On 3 May 2021 a 3-day meeting spanning across all time zones began, with sessions starting at 01:00 in the morning for some, ending at 3:00 AM. for others, 120 participants, 29 IHO Member States from Asia, Americas, Europe, Middle-East, South Pacific, 5 NGIOS, 8 industry partners, user representatives… 12 working groups and project teams, an enlightening stakeholders’ session on the theme “Requirements and suggestions for the S-100 Implementation Decade in Navigation Systems – An industry and user perspective”, and more than 20 hydrographic existing and future standards under the spotlight, more than 70 decisions and actions to move forward - that was the 13th annual meeting of the IHO Hydrographic Services & Standards Committee chaired by M. Magnus Wallhagen, from the Swedish Maritime Authority.
The Gambia Joins the IHO: Strengthening Hydrographic Capacity in West Africa
The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) proudly welcomes the Republic of The Gambia as its newest Member State, marking a significant milestone for both the Organization and the West African region. With this accession, the global hydrographic community continues to grow in Africa, underscoring the increasing recognition of the importance of hydrography for safe navigation but also coastal zone management, tourism, UNCLOS obligations and more.
Seabed data to be discussed at the Ocean Decade Conference
The IHO and the OECD are co-hosting a satellite event during the UN Ocean Decade conference in Barcelona. Entitled "The Seabed Data We Need for the Ocean We Want," this session aims to look at the importance of advancing our understanding of the ocean and fostering increased investment in related activities.
The S-100 framework is now operational
A significant step in the implementation of the S-100 ecosystem was officially achieved in January 2026, when the Phase 1 S-100 product specifications entered into force. Stakeholders can now access and use the operational version of these specifications in real-world environments.

IHO and NOAA Reaffirm their Commitment to Ocean Data with a New MoU
During the 2023 International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Assembly, Secretary General Dr. Mathias Jonas announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the United States’ National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA has supported the IHO since 1990 by hosting the IHO Data Center for Digital Bathymetry (DCDB), an online, open-access database that stores ocean depth data from around the world.
Nominations Open for the MSc in Hydrographic Science
The IHO Secretariat has issued a call for candidates to participate in the Category "A" MSc in Hydrographic Science at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) as part of the IHO Capacity-Building Programme. Nominations for the 14th cohort of the FIG/IHO/ICA recognized course should be sent by 11 January of 2026.
