Mapping the Future: Fiji Hosts Pivotal Meetings on Ocean Mapping and Hydrography
Suva & Nadi, Fiji — November 2024 Fiji became the epicenter of global ocean mapping, hydrographic collaboration and geospatial information management as it hosted a series of landmark meetings with a strong focus on Pacific engagement. From the 41st Meeting of the GEBCO Guiding Committee (GGC41) and the 6th Pacific Ocean Mapping Meeting to the subsequent UN workshops on geospatial frameworks and sustainable development, the events underscored the critical role of ocean and data governance for Pacific Island countries and territories.
Progress on Hydrographic Standards and Services
On 3 May 2021 a 3-day meeting spanning across all time zones began, with sessions starting at 01:00 in the morning for some, ending at 3:00 AM. for others, 120 participants, 29 IHO Member States from Asia, Americas, Europe, Middle-East, South Pacific, 5 NGIOS, 8 industry partners, user representatives… 12 working groups and project teams, an enlightening stakeholders’ session on the theme “Requirements and suggestions for the S-100 Implementation Decade in Navigation Systems – An industry and user perspective”, and more than 20 hydrographic existing and future standards under the spotlight, more than 70 decisions and actions to move forward - that was the 13th annual meeting of the IHO Hydrographic Services & Standards Committee chaired by M. Magnus Wallhagen, from the Swedish Maritime Authority.
The international community gathers in Monaco for the IHO Assembly
Representatives of the International Hydrographic Organization Member States, observers, and private sector, gathered in Monaco from May 1-5, 2023. The Assembly provided a forum to come together, discuss new developments in technical standards, and ocean mapping, and agree on resolutions to guide activities. Key decisions this year included the future of nautical charts and steps to ensure the ongoing transition to digital products and data services.
Worldwide ENC Database working group discusses the future of coverage
The Worldwide ENC Database working group (WEND) gathered last week to discuss the future of global ENC coverage, decisions which are key to support the safety of navigation, search and rescue activities, and mitigate the impacts of storms, marine pollution etc. The goal was to pave the way and be ready for when the new S-100 based digital products are implemented, and to try and coordinate initiatives.
Standards pending entry into force
This page provides a list of IHO standards and product specifications relevant to ECDIS that have been officially published but are not yet in force. These include standards that have been approved and released, but whose implementation dates are in the future, as defined in the S-100 Implementation Roadmap. Only standards that are intended to be implemented in ECDIS are listed here. Each entry includes the publication date, the scheduled date of entry into force, and any applicable notes regarding transition periods or dual-fuel operations. ECDIS manufacturers, hydrographic offices, and system integrators are encouraged to regularly consult this page to prepare for upcoming requirements under the S-100 framework and ensure timely compliance. Representatives of the 98 Member States of the International Hydrographic Organization will gather for the Assembly, Member State and Industry Exhibition from 1 to 5 May 2023. Held every three years, the gathering provides a forum for countries to come together, discuss new developments in technical standards, ocean mapping and agree on resolutions to guide activities. Key topics this year will include the future of charts and steps to ensure the transition to digital data systems.
Empowering Women in Hydrography: A Transformative Three-Year Journey Towards Gender Equality
Like other disciplines within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), hydrography exhibits a gender imbalance, particularly in advanced career stages. Currently, just over 10% of the 99 Member States of the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) have a female National Hydrographer. And while women represent roughly half the population, only 24.8% of them occupy leadership positions with national hydrographic offices. In today’s competitive world, organizations need qualified employees to help them achieve their objectives. By not tapping into half of the available talent pool, they could be missing out. Acknowledging this disparity, the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and the Canadian Hydrographic Service collaboratively initiated a Canadian-funded, groundbreaking three-year project titled "Empowering Women in Hydrography," aimed at fostering gender equality in the field.
Equality in the Workplace Conference
The Scientific Centre of Monaco (CSM), the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) and the Women's Rights Committee of the Government of Monaco, in partnership with the Monegasque Association for Sustainable Finance (AMFID) and SheCanHeCan, are organizing a conference followed by a cocktail reception on gender equality as part of International Women's Day. The event will be held on Thursday March 9th at 18:30 at the Hermitage Hotel in Monaco and will be in French.
IHO Assembly sets the priorities for the next 3 years
The IHO Assembly has finished after 3 days of productive meetings. From 16 to 18 November IHO Member States were able to discuss how to move forward on work items, with the Assembly being held by videoconference.
