Brief history

The CHMB was established in Helsinki, Finland, from May 24 to 26, 1983, following a recommendation from the Baltic hydrographers, as part of a preliminary meeting held in Monaco, on April 19, 1982. Sweden was originally of this initiative and the first president of the CHMB was Commodore Folke Hallbjörner (Sweden). The first step was to agree on the statutes of the CHMB, to establish the Baltic Sea INT chart committee, to discuss the bathymetric charts of the Baltic Sea, the differences between the coordinate systems of the Baltic Sea , the distribution of printed charts, the boundaries of territorial seas, the Baltic Sea radio navigation warning system and the IHO technical assistance program.
