Suva & Nadi, Fiji — November 2024 Fiji became the epicenter of global ocean mapping, hydrographic collaboration and geospatial information management as it hosted a series of landmark meetings with a strong focus on Pacific engagement. From the 41st Meeting of the GEBCO Guiding Committee (GGC41) and the 6th Pacific Ocean Mapping Meeting to the subsequent UN workshops on geospatial frameworks and sustainable development, the events underscored the critical role of ocean and data governance for Pacific Island countries and territories.

Understanding sea-level rise - improving predictions through studying the shape of the seabed

In many places around the world, data clearly shows the level of the sea is rising. In low lying coastal areas, even small increases when coupled with high tides and storm surges have had devastating consequences, such as altering coastlines, impacting offshore energy infrastructure and displacing populations. A better understanding of factors influencing sea level is vital in order to prepare for and mitigate its impacts.

The IHO discusses Ocean Mapping at the IOC UNESCO Executive Council Meeting

As part of its mission to contribute proactively to global initiatives in favour of the ocean, the IHO participated in the 55th meeting of the IOC UNESCO Executive Council in Paris 13-17 June 2022. Discussions focused on the state of the ocean and provided insight into how the IHO could contribute to key activities such as the UN Decade, as well as provide an update on joint projects including GEBCO.

The BGR provides high resolution data for the Pacific and Indian Oceans

The German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) is participating in the IHO-led efforts to increase knowledge of the ocean and has shared high resolution depth data for the German contract areas for deep-sea exploration granted by the International Seabed Authority (ISA) in the Pacific and Indian Oceans.  The BGR provided gridded data for 85.000 km² at a resolution of 120 x 120 meters.

Crowdsourced Bathymetry Working Group Discusses How to Increase Available Data

The IHO Crowdsourced Bathymetry Working Group (CSBWG) held its 10th meeting last week. 56 IHO Member State and stakeholder representatives gathered online to discuss how to increase crowdsourced data around the world and address data quality in the Great Barrier Reef, the Canadian Arctic coast, Japan and China as well the super yacht, commercial survey and private chart sectors.
