The Arctic Regional Hydrographic Commission reviews its activities in 2022
The ARHC has prepared a summary of activities for the past year which includes an update on the development of a pan-Arctic nautical grid and access to data and discusses the IHO roadmap for the implementation of S-100 based services, which will contribute to safety of navigation, environmental protection, and cost efficiencies.

Discussions focused on the state of the ocean and provided insight into how the IHO could contribute to key activities such as the UN Decade, as well as provide an update on joint projects including GEBCO.

The Worldwide ENC Database working group (WEND) gathered last week to discuss the future of global ENC coverage, decisions which are key to support the safety of navigation, search and rescue activities, and mitigate the impacts of storms, marine pollution etc. The goal was to pave the way and be ready for when the new S-100 based digital products are implemented, and to try and coordinate initiatives.
Crowdsourced Bathymetry Working Group Discusses How to Increase Available Data
The IHO Crowdsourced Bathymetry Working Group (CSBWG) held its 10th meeting last week. 56 IHO Member State and stakeholder representatives gathered online to discuss how to increase crowdsourced data around the world and address data quality in the Great Barrier Reef, the Canadian Arctic coast, Japan and China as well the super yacht, commercial survey and private chart sectors.

IHO and NOAA Reaffirm their Commitment to Ocean Data with a New MoU
During the 2023 International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Assembly, Secretary General Dr. Mathias Jonas announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the United States’ National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). NOAA has supported the IHO since 1990 by hosting the IHO Data Center for Digital Bathymetry (DCDB), an online, open-access database that stores ocean depth data from around the world.

The IHO visits the Commonwealth of the Bahamas
On invitation of the Bahamian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, IHO Director Luigi Sinapi paid a High Level Visit to the Commonwealth of The Bahamas from 15 to 19 April. The Visit was aimed at resuming discussions on the Bahamas’ potential membership to the International Hydrographic Organization and on the progress made in the maritime sector of The Bahamas, to further strengthening the national capacity in the area of hydrography and improving the current Bahamian Maritime National Policy.
