Transition to digital data services and other priorities discussed at IHO Council
Representatives of 26 countries sitting on the IHO Council and Observers gathered last week in Monaco to review the work carried out and establish priorities for the coming years. This included progress with the transition to digital data services through the implementation of S-100, the Universal Digital Data Model, as well as hydrography’s contribution to global initiatives such as the Digital Twin of the Ocean.
The French Minister for the Sea visits the IHO
Mrs Annick Girardin, French Minister for the Sea, came to the offices of the IHO during an official visit to the Principality of Monaco on Friday 10 September. The Minister was accompanied by H.E. Mr Laurent Stéfanini, Ambassador of France to Monaco as well as other government representatives.
New chair & vice chair of GEBCO Guiding Committee
Members of the GEBCO Guiding Committee met online 18-20 January to discuss the project’s direction for the coming year, including upcoming initiatives, resource allocation etc. During the meeting, members elected Mr Evert Flier from Norway as the new chair of the Guiding Committee, and Dr Marzia Rovere from Italy as vice chair for 2021 – 2024.
EU Coastal Nation Joins the IHO
Lithuania has officially joined the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), becoming its 103rd Member State and marking a historic milestone as now all EU coastal nations are part of this global organization.

As part of its mission to “participate actively in international initiatives related to the knowledge of the sustainable use of the ocean,” the IHO participated in the 32nd Session of the IOC UNESCO Assembly held in Paris, France from 21-30 June 2023. In addition to engaging in plenary discussions in its role as an Observer, the IHO joined IOC UNESCO in celebrating the 120th anniversary of their joint project, the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO).
Representatives of 98 countries to gather in Monaco for the IHO Assembly
Representatives of the 98 Member States of the International Hydrographic Organization will gather for the Assembly, Member State and Industry Exhibition from 1 to 5 May 2023. Held every three years, the gathering provides a forum for countries to come together, discuss new developments in technical standards, ocean mapping and agree on resolutions to guide activities. Key topics this year will include the future of charts and steps to ensure the transition to digital data systems.
IHO Member States gather for Council meeting
IHO Member States gathered this week as part of the 5th meeting of the Council. Presided by Geneviève Béchard of Canada, participants were able to take stock on progress and discuss next steps on several key actions such as the roadmap for S-100 implementation and the future conversion from S-57 to S-101 ENCs.

Suva & Nadi, Fiji — November 2024 Fiji became the epicenter of global ocean mapping, hydrographic collaboration and geospatial information management as it hosted a series of landmark meetings with a strong focus on Pacific engagement. From the 41st Meeting of the GEBCO Guiding Committee (GGC41) and the 6th Pacific Ocean Mapping Meeting to the subsequent UN workshops on geospatial frameworks and sustainable development, the events underscored the critical role of ocean and data governance for Pacific Island countries and territories.
