Nautical Cartography Bulletins

Nautical Cartography Bulletins: The Regulations of the IHO for International (INT) Charts and Chart Specifications of the IHO (IHO Publication S-4), are intended to provide the cartographic framework for the standardization by member nations of all nautical charts, regardless of format (paper or digital (vector (ENC)/raster)), both in their national series and in the international (INT) series of the IHO. They must be used in all such chart compilation as far as nautical practices and requirements permit. 

In order to promulgate IHO approved changes in nautical chart compilation guidance, "Nautical Cartography Bulletins" (NCB) are developed to communicate how chart producers may incorporate emerging or changing requirements for nautical charts in their production processes.  Each Bulletin explains a particular requirement; recommended guidelines for addressing the issue; and the consequences of not following the recommended guidance. It should be noted that the guidance described in these Bulletins is not compulsory; however it is strongly recommended that chart producers follow them wherever possible to ensure the consistency of nautical chart content worldwide.

All Nautical Cartography Bulletin recommended guidelines and explanations are planned to be incorporated into the next edition of S-4, at which time the guidance becomes authoritative.  Nautical Cartography Bulletins that have been transferred into S-4 will maintain their reference in the Nautical Cartography Bulletins list, and the guidance included in each Bulletin will be replaced with the appropriate S-4 clause references.  Future new or revised guidance will be added as new Nautical Cartography Bulletins, which will subsequently be submitted to the approval of member nations for incorporation in future New Editions/Revisions of S-4 as required.

These Bulletins have resulted from proposals brought to the attention of the Nautical Cartography Working Group (NCWG). New bulletins must be approved by the NCWG.
