New IHO Council meets in Monaco
Representatives of IHO Member States discussed the future of digital data services and other priorities during the meeting of the new IHO Council. Taking place at the Secretariat in Monaco, the 30 countries sitting on Council met for the 1st time with the goal of coordinating the implementation of activities voted on during Assembly in May. The biggest topic of discussion was progress and next steps in the implementation of the Universal Digital Data Model, known as the S-100 framework.

New date and venue for the IHO Assembly
Due to uncertainties regarding the availability of the traditional venue for the Assembly linked with its current use, the IHO Secretariat looked for alternatives. The Directing Committee has, after careful consideration and bearing in mind the organizational, logistical and financial consequences not limited to the Secretariat, decided that the 3rd Session of the IHO Assembly will take place at the Grimaldi Forum in the Principality of Monaco from 2 to 5 May 2023.

Progress on Hydrographic Standards and Services
On 3 May 2021 a 3-day meeting spanning across all time zones began, with sessions starting at 01:00 in the morning for some, ending at 3:00 AM. for others, 120 participants, 29 IHO Member States from Asia, Americas, Europe, Middle-East, South Pacific, 5 NGIOS, 8 industry partners, user representatives… 12 working groups and project teams, an enlightening stakeholders’ session on the theme “Requirements and suggestions for the S-100 Implementation Decade in Navigation Systems – An industry and user perspective”, and more than 20 hydrographic existing and future standards under the spotlight, more than 70 decisions and actions to move forward - that was the 13th annual meeting of the IHO Hydrographic Services & Standards Committee chaired by M. Magnus Wallhagen, from the Swedish Maritime Authority.

Lebanon joins the IHO
Lebanon has joined the International Hydrographic Organization. By becoming its 94th Member State, Lebanon will benefit from the organization’s resources and expertise in order to improve safety of navigation and contribute to the development of its maritime activities.

IHO Assembly sets the priorities for the next 3 years
The IHO Assembly has finished after 3 days of productive meetings. From 16 to 18 November IHO Member States were able to discuss how to move forward on work items, with the Assembly being held by videoconference.

Updated IHO Geospatial Information Registry
The IHO has released an updated Geospatial Information Registry which now contains over 7000 items for the modelling of oceanic data.

New guide on accuracy of depth information in Electronic Navigational Charts - ENCs

New director elected at the IHO
Following the postponement of the IHO Assembly due to the covid-19 pandemic, the IHO Secretariat initiated a remote voting procedure to fill the position of IHO Director which will become vacant in September 2020.

IHO DCDB - temporary app during NCEI outage
Hurricane Helene caused severe damage to several areas of the East Coast of the USA, which in turn has significantly impacted the operations of NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) in Asheville. Many of their systems including the online access to IHO DCDB-archived bathymetric data are currently down.
